Chapter 6 - A Mother’s Confession

“You killed him,” I said, stepping past the threshold, keeping my eyes locked on the barrel of the gun. “You poisoned him, just like you tried to break Savannah.”
Bernice laughed, a chilling, hollow sound that echoed off the peeling wallpaper. “He was weak. He wanted to throw away twenty years of status for a guilty conscience. Just like you are about to throw away your entire family inheritance for a woman who doesn't even love you.”
“She saved my life by documenting your abuse,” I spat back.
“Oh, Savannah is a survivor, I'll give her that,” Bernice smiled coldly, stepping closer. “Too bad she won't survive what’s coming next. Did you really think I sent that text message last night? I didn't have to. The DNA test results for the child she's carrying are already being processed by a lab in the city—and the name on file isn't yours.”

My heart skipped a beat. For a fraction of a second, doubt threatened to tear me apart. But then I remembered the three years of terror in Savannah's notes, the genuine look of horror in her eyes, and the calculated malice dripping from my mother's lips.
“You’re lying,” I whispered.
