Chapter 7 - The Final Leverage

“Am I?” Bernice smirked, her finger tightening slightly on the trigger. “Check your phone, Christopher. The proof of who really funded this entire trap is sitting in your email inbox right now.”

My phone vibrated violently in my pocket. Keeping my eyes fixed on my mother, I slid my hand inside and tapped the screen. A notification from an encrypted server flashed on the display: a high-resolution PDF document attached from an unknown sender.

Before I could open the file, the heavy wooden floorboards behind Bernice creaked. Headlights suddenly cut through the dusty windows, casting blinding beams across the room as a car door slammed shut outside.

“You didn't come alone,” Bernice snarled, turning her gun toward the doorway just as the front door was kicked off its hinges.

Standing in the frame, pale but resolute with local police officers flanking her sides, was Savannah.
