Chapter 5 - The Trap

Back at the hotel, my phone buzzed at noon. It was an unrecognized local number, followed by a voicemail recording. I pressed play, and my mother’s voice hissed through the speaker.
“Looking for proof, Christopher? You’re chasing ghosts. But if you want the real truth about your precious wife—and the secret bank accounts she opened behind your back—meet me at the old family lake house by sunset. Come alone.”
I didn't tell Savannah. I couldn't risk her health or peace of mind. Instead, I drove two hours north into the heavily wooded hills where my family’s neglected lake house stood rotting away near the water.

The front door was unlocked. Dust motes danced in the fading orange light streaming through the dirty windows.
“I knew you’d come,” Bernice’s voice echoed from the dark hallway. She stepped out from the shadows, holding a small, silver-plated revolver steady in her right hand. “Just like your father. Too stubborn, too proud, and entirely too blind to see what’s right in front of you.”
