Chapter 11 - THE GRAND ILLUSION

Friday evening arrived under a blanket of heavy indigo sky. Sterling Manor glistened like a crown of light atop the dark coastal cliffs, its tall arched windows spilling warm golden radiance across the manicured lawns. Carriages and luxury motorcars glided up the winding cobblestone driveway, discharging the city’s elite—corrupt magistrates, high-ranking councilors, foreign investors, and society journalists dressed in silk and velvet.

Inside the third-floor suite, Clara carefully fastened the small pearl buttons down the back of my deep emerald-green gown.

"You look breathtaking, Miss Julianna," Clara whispered, her voice trembling slightly with nervous anticipation. "Like a queen walking into battle."

"It is a battle, Clara," I said softly, looking at my reflection in the full-length mirror. Beneath the polished silk and elegant mask of hair pins, my heart hammered against my ribs, but my hands were entirely steady.

I checked the small velvet reticule hanging from my wrist. Inside was a tiny, iron-forged key to the library balcony and a folded transcript of the illegal offshore transfers Arthur had compiled from Marcus’s shadow ledger.

Downstairs, the sweeping melodies of a string quartet floated up through the grand staircase.

At precisely seven o'clock, the heavy lock on my bedroom door turned. Marcus Sterling stepped into the room, impeccably groomed in a black tailcoat with a crisp white bow tie. On his lapel sat the golden pin of the Sterling Estate Trust—the dragon wrapped around a seal.

"It is time, my dear Julianna," Marcus said smoothly, offering his arm with a theatrical bow. "The board members and international buyers have arrived. They are eager to hear your announcement."

I turned, forcing a faint, compliant smile onto my face. "I am ready, Marcus."

As I placed my hand gently on his forearm, his fingers tightened over mine just a fraction too hard—a silent, physical reminder of the threat hanging over my life.

"Remember your lines," Marcus murmured in my ear as we walked down the grand marble staircase toward the bustling ballroom. "Announce your temporary retirement, sign the trust transfer documents, and smile for the photographers. Try anything foolish, and my men will ensure the boy and your faithful maid never leave this estate alive."

"I wouldn't dream of making a scene," I replied, keeping my voice perfectly calm as we stepped into the glittering sea of champagne flutes and laughing guests.
