Chapter 12 - THE STRINGS OF TRUTH

The grand ballroom was a spectacle of wealth and influence. Crystal chandeliers hung from the vaulted ceilings, reflecting in the polished parquet floor. Surrounding the perimeter were heavy velvet drapes masking the floor-to-ceiling glass doors that opened onto the cliffside terrace.

High above the crowd, on the shadowed mezzanine balcony, sat the twelve-piece orchestra.

As Marcus led me through the sea of greeting guests, my eyes surreptitiously drifted up toward the balcony. There, seated behind the second cello, was a figure dressed in a black musician's dress, dark hair swept up in a tight coil.

It was Elena.

She caught my gaze for a split second, giving me a tiny, imperceptible nod before returning her bow to the strings, playing the intricate harmony of a classical waltz. She was safe, in position, and waiting for the mark.

Marcus guided me toward a raised dais at the front of the ballroom, where a heavy mahogany signing desk stood, surrounded by floral arrangements. Sitting around the table were six prominent men—the senior trustees of the Sterling Trust, along with Herr Richter, the lead representative of Astraea Holdings.

"Ah, the lovely heiress!" Herr Richter purred, standing up and bowing deeply over my hand. "A bittersweet evening, Miss Sterling, but Mr. Sterling has assured us your health and peace of mind will be well cared for under the new arrangement."

"Mr. Sterling is nothing if not... thorough," I said, casting a sharp look at Marcus, who merely smiled and patted his coat pocket—where the trust transfer papers lay ready for my signature.

At seven-forty-five, Marcus stepped up to the microphone stand at the edge of the dais, tapping his silver spoon against a crystal champagne glass. The sharp clink-clink-clink echoed across the hall, bringing the loud chatter of two hundred guests to a gradual hush.

"Ladies and gentlemen, distinguished colleagues, and dear friends," Marcus began, his voice booming with artificial warmth and supreme confidence. "Welcome to Sterling Manor. Tonight is a night of profound transition..."

As Marcus launched into his rehearsed speech about honoring my father's legacy while protecting my delicate health, I glanced toward the heavy side doors of the ballroom.

Standing in the shadows of the doorway, clad in a server's black vest and carrying a tray of champagne glasses, was Arthur. His dark cap was pulled low, but his piercing gray eyes were locked onto Marcus with quiet, burning intensity.

Everything was in place. The trap was set.
