Chapter 13 - THE UNMASKING

"...and so," Marcus announced, gesturing toward the mahogany desk with a dramatic flourish, "it is with great pride and deep personal care that I present the documents transferring the full management of the Sterling Trust to our esteemed partners at Astraea Holdings, signed by Miss Julianna Sterling herself."
The room erupted into polite applause. Marcus turned to me, pulling a silver fountain pen from his pocket and laying the printed contracts on the desk.
"Sign it now, Julianna," he whispered under the cover of the applause, his voice laced with cold poison. "And keep smiling."
I stepped up to the desk. I picked up the silver pen, hovering the nib over the signature line.
Then, I stopped.
The applause slowly died down as the guests realized I was sitting motionless. Marcus’s smile faltered, his eyes narrowing dangerously.
"Julianna?" Marcus prompted, taking a step closer. "Is something wrong?"
"Yes, Marcus," I said, my voice ringing out clearly through the microphone stand beside the desk, echoing across the quieted room. "Something is terribly wrong. I cannot sign these documents."
A collective murmur rippled through the crowd.
"Julianna, please," Marcus laughed nervously, turning to the audience with an apologetic gesture. "As I mentioned, my dear ward has been under immense psychological strain—"
"I am under no strain, Marcus," I interrupted loudly, standing up and looking directly at the prominent newspaper editors standing near the front row. "I refuse to sign over my family's legacy to a criminal who murdered my father, blackmailed my family, and attempted to assassinate my fiancé!"
Gasps echoed through the ballroom. Herr Richter jumped up from his chair in outrage. "What is the meaning of this madness?!"
"Guards!" Marcus snarled, dropping his facade completely as panic flared in his eyes. "The heiress is hysterical! Escort her to her room immediately!"
Four gray-suited security guards rushed toward the dais from the side doors.
Before they could reach the steps, a sharp, authoritative voice cut through the chaos from the balcony above.
"Stand down! All of you!"
Every head in the ballroom snapped upward.

Standing at the edge of the orchestra balcony, illuminated by the bright crystal chandeliers, was Elena Sterling. She threw off her musician's shawl, stepping into full view of the two hundred guests who had believed her dead for twelve long years.
"My God..." an elderly trustee gasped, dropping his wine glass. "It's... it's Elena!"
