Chapter 16 - THE CLEANSE

The dawn that followed the fateful gala broke clear and luminous over the coastal cliffs. Golden sunlight streamed through the tall stained-glass windows of Sterling Manor, sweeping away the ghosts that had lingered in its dark corridors for over a decade.
By noon, the estate was surrounded not by secretive guards, but by official vehicles from the State Attorney's Office and the Federal Prosecutor.
In the grand library, federal investigators carefully cataloged the mountains of evidence retrieved from Marcus Sterling's hidden safe and his city offices. The shadow ledger, the forged land deeds, and the bank statements detailing wire transfers to Astraea Holdings provided an airtight case.
The Police Chief himself presented the findings to us in the morning room.
"Marcus Sterling’s network has completely collapsed," the Chief declared, placing his leather hat on the table. "With the documents provided by Mr. Vance and Miss Elena, we have already arrested four corrupt magistrates, the state auditor, and Herr Richter of Astraea Holdings. Every asset stolen from your family trust over the last twenty years will be restored in full."
Elena sat beside me on the velvet sofa, holding a warm cup of tea, her small son Leo resting his head peacefully against her knee. For the first time in twelve years, her posture was relaxed, the constant knot of fear in her chest finally unraveled.
"And my father's name?" Arthur asked quietly, standing by the large bay window that looked out over the ocean.

"Thomas Vance has been officially exonerated by the High Court," the Chief replied solemnly, standing up to bow to Arthur. "A public apology from the State Department will be published in tomorrow morning’s national papers. His legacy as an honorable land surveyor is fully restored."
Arthur looked out at the sparkling sea, a single tear cutting a track through the faint scar on his cheek. I walked over, slipping my hand into his, feeling the warmth of his fingers interlock with mine—no longer a secret kept in the dark, but a promise made in the sun.
