Chapter 6 - THE ARCHIVE OF DEAD NAMES

The cold damp air of the crypt felt less suffocating now, replaced by the sharp, electric surge of purpose. I turned the pages of the thick blue ledger Arthur had placed before me. Inside were rows of meticulous hand-written entries, banking wire numbers, and real estate deeds spanning over twenty years.

"This is Marcus’s personal shadow ledger," Arthur explained, pointing a lean finger at a column of recent transactions dated just three months ago. "When I investigated my own attempted murder, I tracked the shell companies he used to pay off the mechanics who cut my brakes. Every single payout came from an account named Astraea Holdings—the same entity buying out your family’s remaining estate this Friday."

"He's selling the estate to himself," I whispered, the sickening reality dawning on me. "Using our own stolen money to buy our physical properties for pennies on the dollar."

"Precisely," Elena said, setting down her teacup. "Twelve years ago, when he forced me off the riverbank, I thought he was just an ambitious lawyer stealing from Father. But it goes deeper, Jules. Marcus isn't working alone. Astraea Holdings is backed by a syndicate of corrupt city officials and magistrates. That's why the police closed my missing persons case so quickly, and why Arthur’s death was ruled an accidental cliff fall within forty-eight hours."

I looked up from the ledger, my eyes locking with Arthur’s. "If the city authorities are in his pocket, showing this ledger to the police will only give Marcus a head-up to destroy the evidence—and eliminate us."

"Which is why we aren't going to the police," Arthur said, a faint, sharp smile touching his lips for the first time. "We are going to use his own grand finale against him."

"The Friday Gala," I realized aloud.

Every autumn, the Sterling Estate hosted the annual Charity Ball in the manor’s grand ballroom—an event attended by the city’s highest society, including judges, newspaper editors, and foreign investors. This year, Marcus had planned to announce the complete restructuring of the Sterling Trust during the event, effectively stripping me of my inheritance under the guise of 'protective financial management.'

"At the gala," Elena said softly, "the press will be everywhere. The foreign buyers will be present. If we expose him in front of two hundred high-profile witnesses, no amount of bribed magistrates can sweep it under the rug."

"There's just one problem," I noted, my mind racing through the logistics. "Marcus already suspects I’m onto something. He saw me at the café today, and he knows Leo brought me the hair clip. He’s going to have his guards watching my every move at the manor."

"Let him watch," Arthur said, reaching into a steel lockbox under the table and pulling out a small brass key with a numbered tag. "He thinks you're isolated and crumbling under grief. We will let him believe his pressure is working—while we prepare the trap from inside his own stronghold."
