Chapter 16 - THE TRAP IN THE FORTRESS

Detective Han stepped into the damp cell block, a heavy 9mm pistol glinting in the pale yellow light of the hanging bulbs. Behind him stood two heavy-set guards in dark tactical vests.

"You really are your sister's blood, Linh," Han said, a cold, mocking smile curling his lips. "Persistent to the point of absolute stupidity. Did you really think you could slip onto my island undetected?"

Linh kept her body firmly positioned between Han and the iron bars of Mai’s cell. Her fingers tightened around the emergency flare hidden in her coat pocket.

"You used me for six years, Han," Linh said, her voice dropping into a deadly, unyielding register. "You made me hunt down my own sister under the guise of justice."

"You were the perfect cover," Han replied casually, stepping closer. "A grieving sister searching every corner of the coast drew zero suspicion from the internal affairs bureau. Every time Mai moved, you led my team straight to her neighborhood."

"Han, leave her out of this!" Mai screamed from behind the bars, pulling against the iron. "I gave you the financial ledgers six years ago! I gave you everything!"

"And yet you kept copies, didn't you, Mai?" Han’s eyes narrowed into dark slits. "Where are the offshore transaction keys? Tell me, or I execute your sister right here on these flagstones."

Han raised the barrel of his pistol, leveling it directly between Linh's eyes.
