Chapter 19 - THE REUNION ON THE DECK

"Jump!" Captain Binh roared, swinging the wooden boat within ten feet of the lower cliff ledge.

Linh grabbed Mai’s hand. "Together!"

They leaped off the limestone cliff, plunging through the rain before crashing onto the soft canvas cargo nets rigged along the side of The Golden Dragon.

Binh hauled both women onto the wooden deck just as he slammed the throttle forward, sending the heavy vessel surging out of the cove into the open, mist-covered waters of Ha Long Bay.

From the cabin doorway, little Rosy ran out into the rain, her small bare feet tapping against the wet deck.

"Mommy!" Rosy sobbed.

Mai dropped to her knees on the wet deck, her arms opening wide as she pulled Rosy and Minh into an overwhelming, tear-filled embrace. She kissed their hair, their cheeks, their hands, weeping open tears of pure, unrestrained motherly relief.

"My babies... my sweet babies," Mai sobbed, holding them so tightly it felt as though she would never let go again. "I'm so sorry... I'm so sorry I was gone for so long..."

Minh buried his face in his mother's neck, his small shoulders shaking as the heavy burden he had carried for six long years finally dissolved into the rain.

Linh stood nearby, wiping tears from her eyes, watching her sister's family finally restored.

Mai looked up from her children, reaching out her hand to pull Linh down onto the deck beside them.
