Chapter 18 - THE STORM ON THE SEA
Shouts and frantic gunshots echoed through the stone fortress behind them as the sisters scrambled down the slippery concrete steps toward the outer cliff ledge.
Rain lashed against their faces as they burst into the open air. Thirty feet below, the black ocean waves crashed violently against the jagged limestone rocks of Islet 9.
Gliding through the sea mist below, its diesel engine revving high, was The Golden Dragon.
"Linh! Mai!" Captain Binh’s voice boomed through a megaphone from the deck.
On the roof of the fortress above, Han staggered out onto the stone ramparts, his face smeared with soot, his gun raised toward the water.
"Shoot the boat!" Han roared to his surviving guard. "Kill them all!"
Before the guard could raise his rifle, twelve-year-old Minh stepped out onto the bow of the wooden boat, holding Binh’s heavy steel flare pistol with both hands.
"Leave my family alone!" Minh screamed into the storm.
Minh pulled the trigger.
The heavy flare rocketed through the rainy sky, striking the wooden ammunition crate stacked on the fortress rampart right beside Han!

A blinding orange fireball erupted along the upper wall, throwing Han and his men backward into the collapsing stone battlements as shattered granite rained down into the sea.
