Chapter 10 - COUNTDOWN TO MONDAY

The next forty-eight hours passed in a blur of agonizing tension and quiet preparation.
Clara spent the time recovering her strength, tending to her bruised ribs, and rehearsing every single movement of the ventilation route with Lily. Using a piece of chalk, Julian drew the exact dimensions of the bank's utility ducts on the church basement floor, teaching Lily how to crawl quietly without making the sheet metal rattle.
The little girl was surprisingly brave. She treated the exercise like a solemn game her father had designed just for her.
"When I put my finger on the glass box, Mommy," Lily asked quietly on Sunday night as they rested on a pile of blankets, "will Daddy hear us?"
Clara felt tears welling in her eyes, but she forced a gentle smile, stroking her daughter's hair. "He’s watching over us right now, sweetie. He’s going to make sure we’re safe."
At 7:30 AM on Monday morning, a heavy fog rolled in from the harbor, cloaking the skyscraper towers of the financial district in a thick, gray blanket of mist.
Across the street from the massive, granite facade of National Commerce Bank, plainclothes police officers in heavy coats walked back and forth, their eyes scanning every pedestrian. On the roof of the adjacent parking structure, two SWAT snipers adjusted their long-range rifle scopes, monitoring the bank's grand revolving doors.
Inside a parked, blacked-out surveillance van down the block, Captain Reyes sat staring at a bank of monitor screens, his tactical radio clutched in his hand.
"All units, stay sharp," Reyes ordered into his radio, his voice cold and steady. "The vault opens in thirty minutes. If she shows her face, do not engage in conversation. Neutralize the threat immediately."
A block away, hidden inside an alleyway behind an electrical contractor's van, Clara took a deep breath, tightening her belt. She looked down at Lily, who was wearing a dark rain jacket over her yellow coat, holding Reyes's silver badge safely tucked in her inner pocket.
Julian checked his watch, racking the slide of his shotgun one final time.
"It's 8:45 AM," Julian whispered, looking at Clara with absolute trust. "In two minutes, I’m going to turn this street into a warzone. The second those snipers turn their heads, you and Lily get into that boiler room."

Clara gripped Julian’s hand tightly. "Thank you, Julian. For everything."
"Finish what Daniel started, Clara," Julian said with a fierce, proud grin. "Now go!"
