Chapter 18 - DANIEL’S LAST GIFT
Three days later, the rain finally cleared, giving way to a crisp, warm autumn sun.
Clara, Lily, and Julian stood inside the quiet conference room of the Federal District Court downtown. Sitting across from them was Federal Special Agent Sarah Lin, who placed a sealed wooden box on the table.
"Before Detective Daniel Vance passed away in Oregon," Agent Lin said with deep respect, "he requested that this box be handed directly to you once Captain Reyes was brought to justice."
Clara touched the dark oak box, her fingers trembling as she unlatched the brass clasp.
Inside lay three items: Daniel’s original gold police badge, a thick financial deed, and a handwritten letter sealed in a white envelope addressed to Clara and Lily.
Clara opened the letter, reading Daniel’s familiar, steady handwriting aloud in a soft, choked whisper:
"My dearest Clara and my beloved Lily,
If you are reading this, it means Julian helped you finish the fight I could not complete myself. Words cannot express the heartbreak of being forced to stay away from you for all these years. Every breath I took in hiding was spent protecting you from the shadow that took over our city.
Clara, you are the strongest person I have ever known. Lily, my little star, your daddy loved you every single second of his life.
The deed in this box is for a small farmhouse near the coast in Maine—bought under a clean, legal trust in your names. It is safe, peaceful, and paid in full. Live well, love deeply, and never live in fear again.
