Chapter 7 - INTO THE SUBTERRANEAN MAZE

The tunnel was damp, freezing, and suffocatingly narrow. The stench of stagnant saltwater and rotting timber filled the air as Clara and Lily hurried through the dark mud, the beam of Clara's flashlight dancing frantically off slick brick walls.
Above them, the faint, muffled thuds of explosions and gunfire slowly faded as they moved deeper inland. Lily clutched her yellow coat tightly, her small shoes splashing through filthy water, but she didn't shed a single tear. In her left hand, she still held Captain Reyes’s silver badge pressed against her stomach like an talisman.
"Mommy," Lily whispered, her voice echoing softly in the dark pipe. "Are we going to see Daddy’s box?"
Clara paused for a moment, her chest aching with a mixture of profound grief and fiercely renewed purpose. She knelt in the mud, wiping a smudge of dirt from her daughter’s forehead.
"Yes, sweetie," Clara said softly, looking into her daughter's clear blue eyes—the exact same eyes Daniel had possessed. "We are going to find what your daddy left for us. And then we are going to make sure that bad man can never hurt anyone ever again."
After twenty minutes of exhausting crawling, the brick tunnel opened up into a vast, cavernous expanse: the abandoned 5th Street subway platform, closed since the late 1970s. Decaying wooden benches, rusted turnstiles, and shredded movie posters lined the concrete platform, illuminated only by the faint green glow of emergency exit lights near the far stairwell.
Suddenly, a metallic click echoed from the shadows behind a rusted train car!
Clara instantly pulled Lily behind her, swinging her flashlight toward the noise while raising the heavy revolver with both hands. "Show yourself!" she commanded, her voice trembling but fierce.
A tall figure stepped into the light, holding a bleeding left arm wrapped in a torn strip of canvas. It was Julian. He was limping, covered in soot and drywall dust, but his expression was calm.
"You made it," Julian grunted, wincing as he leaned against a concrete pillar. "Reyes’s men thought I was alone in the shop. I dropped three of them before blowing the fuel tanks and sealing the hatch."
May you like
"Julian! You're hurt!" Clara gasped, rushing forward to support him.
"Just a grazing round," Julian gritted his teeth. "We don't have time to bleed. Reyes knows we’re underground. He’s already contacting the Metropolitan Bank’s security board to lock down the downtown branch before morning."
