Chapter 4 - THE TRUTH IN THE LEATHER
Clara sat frozen on the metal stool, the sound of the rain beating against the corrugated tin roof fading into a dull, distant roar. "What... what did you just say?"
"Daniel uncovered Reyes's entire network eight years ago," Julian explained, his voice strained. "Reyes wasn't just taking bribes from the cartel; he was running the cartel's distribution network through precinct evidence lockers. When Daniel realized how deep it went—that federal judges and the Mayor were involved—he knew he couldn't arrest them. He was going to be executed."
Julian placed a faded photo on the bench: Daniel, smiling in his dress uniform, standing beside a younger Julian.
"Federal Internal Affairs staged Daniel's disappearance," Julian continued. "They put him into an ultra-classified, deep-cover witness protection program under an assumed name in Oregon. He wanted to bring you with him, Clara, but Reyes had eyes on your apartment twenty-four hours a day. If you had vanished with Daniel, Reyes would have known it was a setup and destroyed all the evidence. Daniel had to let you believe he was a traitor to keep you alive."
Tears spilled over Clara's blood-crusted cheeks. "Eight years... I spent eight years believing he hated us... believing he left me pregnant and alone..."
"He loved you more than his own life," Julian said quietly. "He spent every single day collecting data, waiting for the right moment to strike back. But three weeks ago... Daniel passed away from stage-four pancreatic cancer in a federal facility in Portland."
Clara covered her mouth, a heartbroken sob tearing from her throat. Lily reached over, wrapping her tiny arms around her mother's waist.
"Before Daniel died," Julian said, his eyes turning cold, "he finalized his ultimate countermeasure. He placed the complete, unedited archive of Reyes’s crimes—audio recordings, bank account ledgers, video feeds, and cartel contracts—into a blind, biometric vault at the National Commerce Bank downtown."

Julian pointed to the silver badge sitting on the table between them.
"That vault can only be unlocked by two physical keys combined," Julian stated. "First, the biological DNA of Daniel's child... and second, the encrypted master microchip built inside Captain Reyes's official command badge."
