Chapter 13 - THE PHANTOM FILE
Daniel sat at the dining table, the silver USB drive plugged into his encrypted laptop. Valeria, Mateo, and Sofía stood behind him in tense silence as the security protocols bypassed the drive's initial encryption layer.
"This wasn't part of the automated server upload from Iceland," Valeria observed, leaning over his shoulder. "This was stored completely offline."
The screen flickered, opening a directory containing hundreds of scanned bank statements, property deeds, and recorded phone calls spanning over three years.
Daniel opened the primary folder labeled: PROJECT CAGE.
The documents revealed the true scope of the conspiracy. It wasn't just about controlling Garza Security or taking over Daniel’s estate.
Lucía, Hector, and Rodrigo Alvarado were part of a massive international syndicate laundering money through high-end real estate developments across San Pedro Garza García, Texas, and Switzerland.
And the primary target of their next acquisition wasn't Daniel's firm.
It was his late wife’s estate—a massive parcel of undeveloped land in southern Mexico rich in rare lithium deposits, currently held in a private trust for Mateo and Sofía until their eighteenth birthdays.
Daniel scrolled down to the final document in the folder—a legal petition for the complete termination of parental rights, dated two weeks in the future.
Attached to the petition was a medical certificate signed by a doctor in Switzerland, certifying that Mateo and Sofía suffered from a severe, hereditary psychiatric condition that required lifelong institutionalization.
Daniel’s blood ran completely cold.
"They weren't trying to just get rid of me," Daniel whispered, his voice shaking with absolute horror. "They were going to declare my children mentally incompetent so they could seize their mother's trust."
Valeria stared at the screen, her hand covering her mouth. "Daniel... this goes way beyond corporate fraud. This is organized crime at the highest government levels."
Suddenly, Daniel’s laptop screen glitched.
The video files minimized, and a new, unread email popped up in his inbox from an anonymous, untraceable address.
The subject line read: WE HAVE THE Swiss DOCTOR. LEAVE SAN PEDRO TONIGHT OR THE KIDS DON'T MAKE IT TO TRIAL.
