Chapter 16 - THE LAST STAND OF LUCÍIA
With Dr. Weber in Swiss custody, the international syndicate collapsed like a house of cards. Over thirty corporate executives, corrupt judges, and politicians across Mexico, the US, and Switzerland were swept up in a massive federal sting operation code-named Operation Pantry.
Three weeks later, Daniel returned to Monterrey for the final pre-trial hearing at the State Supreme Court.
Inside the high-security courtroom, Lucía sat at the defense table. She no longer wore emerald designer dresses or flawless makeup. Clad in a dull beige prison jumpsuit, her hair tied back loosely, she looked gaunt, hollow, and defeated.
Her high-powered defense attorneys attempted one final play—claiming she was an unwilling accomplice manipulated by Hector Varela and Rodrigo Alvarado.
The judge looked down over his glasses at the defense team, then turned to Daniel, who sat in the front row with Mateo, Sofía, and Valeria.
"Mr. Garza," the judge spoke, his voice echoing in the marble courtroom. "Before I rule on the admissibility of the Iceland server records and render the final protective order, do you wish to address the court?"
Daniel stood up slowly. He didn't look at the lawyers. He looked directly at Lucía.
"For months, my children were trapped in a house of silence," Daniel spoke, his baritone voice firm and resonant. "They were bruised, terrified, and forced to endure cruel punishments behind a locked door while I was blinded by corporate ambitions and false trust. Lucía thought that by locking them away, she could erase their voices."
Lucía lowered her head, refusing to meet his eyes.
"But a child’s voice cannot be erased by steel locks or thick oak doors," Daniel continued, stepping toward the center aisle. "My son had the courage to record the truth. My daughter had the strength to remember where the evidence was hidden. They broke the silence—not me. And today, those locked doors are opened forever."
The judge nodded solemnly, slamming his wooden gavel against the sound block with a decisive strike.
"Emergency protective orders are granted permanently," the judge ruled. "All assets tied to the fraud are frozen and reverted to the Garza Family Trust. The defendant, Lucía Mendez, will remain in maximum-security federal custody without bail pending trial for child abuse, corporate fraud, and conspiracy to commit murder."

As the guards pulled Lucía up from her chair, she finally turned her head, looking at Sofía sitting beside Mateo.
Sofía didn't hide behind her brother this time. She sat tall, holding Mateo’s hand, looking back at Lucía with quiet, fearless eyes.
