Chapter 10 - The Final Price

The abandoned clinic sat deep in the pine woods, its rusted iron gates swinging in the howling wind. I stepped through the broken glass doors of the lobby, my boots crunching on the debris.

Dr. Vance was waiting in the center of the dark operating room, surrounded by three armed guards.

"You're braver than your son, Teresa," Vance said, his voice echoing against the tiled walls.

"Hand over the ledger."

"Where is the master drive?" I demanded, holding the ledger over a burning metal barrel I had lit upon arriving.

"The drive containing the medical records of every victim you've exploited."

"Right here," Vance said, pulling a heavy black flash drive from his coat pocket.

"A fair trade. Your silence for her freedom."

I stepped forward and threw the ledger into the flames. As the guards lunged forward to extinguish the fire, Vance stepped into the light to hand me the drive—unaware that my coat was fitted with a live audio-video feed wired directly to the Federal Strike Team waiting three hundred yards outside.

"Thank you for the confession, Doctor," I whispered.

Before Vance could react, tactical flashbangs shattered the high windows, blinding the room in white light. SWAT officers breached the doors, swarming the operating theater in seconds.

Vance was slammed against the cold concrete floor, his hands pinned behind his back as the federal lead agent stepped up beside me.

"We got everything on tape, Teresa. It's finally over."

Three months later, the syndicate was completely dismantled. Rodrigo was sentenced to life without parole, while Vance and his network faced federal racketeering and human trafficking charges.

Standing on the balcony of a new seaside house in California, far away from the Texas dirt, I watched Mariana laugh as she walked along the beach, her skin healthy and her spirit finally restored.

I had lost my son, but I had saved my daughter. And for the first time in eight long years, our family was truly free.
