Chapter 12 - The Betrayal Within

I immediately contacted Agent Miller, the federal prosecutor who had handled Vance’s arrest. We met at a secured diner off the highway outside Los Angeles.

I slid the Swiss medical file across the table.

"Sterling is still operating," I said, leaning in.

"Vance was just his chief surgeon. The real buyer is in Zurich."

Agent Miller examined the papers with a tight, grim expression. But instead of calling his team, he quietly slid the file into his briefcase and locked it.

"Mrs. Mendoza, this file doesn't leave this table," Miller said, his voice dropping into a flat, unnatural tone.

"What are you talking about?"

"Victor Sterling funds half of the federal medical research initiatives in this country," Miller replied coldly, looking around the diner.

"Do you really think a few local cops and an FBI strike team can bring down a man who buys governments? You were supposed to take your victory and stay quiet."

My blood ran ice-cold as I realized the truth.

"You're working for him."

"I'm protecting the balance," Miller said, reaching inside his jacket.

"Hand over the cassette tape, Teresa. Let the boy have his treatment, and Sterling will grant you a comfortable retirement. Refuse, and you won't survive the night."
