I raised the rifle, leveling the barrel directly at the back of Sterling's head.

"Step away from the machines," I commanded, my voice echoing in the sterile room.

Sterling slowly turned around. His face was weathered by age, but his eyes were sharp, calculating, and completely devoid of remorse.

"Your daughter-in-law's blood holds a rare genetic mutation that halts cellular degeneration. With her marrow, my grandson lives. With her DNA, we can cure thousands of incurable diseases."

"By turning her into a caged animal?" I spat, tightening my grip on the trigger.

"By letting my son starve her in a chicken coop?"

"Rodrigo was crude and unstable. But the science... the science is pure."

Behind me, the heavy security doors slammed shut with a deafening thud. Emergency red lights began to flash along the ceiling.

"Did you really think you could walk into my facility alone?" Sterling chuckled, raising a remote control.

"I didn't come alone, Sterling," I said, a slow smile spreading across my face.
