Chapter 16 - The Siege

The main glass doors of the facility shattered in a violent explosion.
Through the smoke, a specialized tactical unit from the State Attorney General’s Independent Internal Affairs Division—the only uncorrupted agency I had secretly contacted using the evidence from Miller's briefcase—swarmed into the corridor.
At the front of the unit was Deputy Sheriff Morales, wearing full body armor and holding a breacher's shotgun.
"Drop the remote, Sterling!" Morales roared, sweeping the room with his weapon.
Sterling’s personal mercenaries opened fire from the upper catwalks, filling the underground lab with deafening gunfire and flying glass. I dived behind a heavy steel medical cart as bullets strayed through the air, punching holes through the control panels.
"Teresa, get to the main console!" Morales yelled, returning fire toward the catwalks.
"Shut down the purge system!"
I scrambled across the slick tiled floor toward the central computer, bullets tearing into the drywall above my head. Sparks flew from the consoles as electrical fires broke out across the room.
I jammed the master flash drive I had taken from Miller’s briefcase into the central server port and slammed my hand onto the emergency override switch.
The red alarm sirens abruptly cut off, replaced by the green light of a full system lockdown. The entire database—decades of illegal human trials, offshore banking records, and the names of every high-ranking official on Sterling's payroll—was instantly transmitted to state and international law enforcement servers.
Sterling watched the screen turn green in absolute horror.

"No... no!" he screamed, dropping his silver cane.
Morales kicked the remote from Sterling's hand and slammed the old billionaire face-first against the glass pod, snapping heavy steel cuffs over his wrists.
