Chapter 5 - The Reckoning

I stood in the hospital hallway, staring down at Mariana through the glass window of her room. She looked so fragile, resting under the clean white sheets, unaware that her nightmare had been funding the very life I had enjoyed for the last eight years.

I looked down at my hands. My son thought he had trapped me in his web of greed and fear. He believed I would choose the family name over justice.

I walked back into Dr. Evans' office and looked the physician dead in the eye.

"Doctor, I want you to contact the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the state prosecutor immediately."

"Mrs. Mendoza... you understand this will involve your son?"

"My son died eight years ago," I said, my voice steady and cold as stone.

"The man on that ranch is a criminal."

Two hours later, three black SUVs pulled up to the driveway of the Mendoza ranch. I sat in the passenger seat of the lead vehicle alongside two federal agents.

Rodrigo was standing on the front porch, holding a glass of whiskey, expecting me to pull up alone with Mariana. When he saw the federal badges emerging from the vehicles, the glass slipped from his fingers and shattered against the floorboards.

"Mom! What did you do?!" he screamed as the agents tackled him to the ground and snapped heavy steel handcuffs around his wrists.

"You said I would destroy this family if I saved her," I said, stepping up to the porch and looking down at my son as he writhed in the dirt.

"You were wrong, Rodrigo. You sold our souls for this land. Now it's time to pay the bill."

Rodrigo was led away in chains, facing life in prison alongside the underground medical network he had served. I sold the ranch the following month, using every single cent of the proceeds to pay for Mariana's complete medical recovery, long-term therapy, and legal defense.

She never had to eat from the dirt again. And for the rest of my days, I dedicated my life to ensuring she finally got the freedom, care, and peace my son had stolen from her.
