Chapter 2 - The Diner and the Clinic

I loaded Mariana into my truck and drove away from the ranch as fast as the engine would take us. Ten miles down the highway, I pulled into a quiet roadside diner. I ordered a hot bowl of beef soup, and Mariana devoured it in less than two minutes, scraping the bottom of the ceramic bowl with her spoon.
"I'm so sorry..." she stammered, tears welling in her sunken eyes as she looked up at me.
"I'm so sorry for eating like a wild animal."
"When did you last have a real meal, Mariana?"
"Maybe... maybe twelve days ago. He locked the pantry."
My blood ran ice-cold. Mariana squeezed her eyes shut, her voice trembling as the truth spilled out.
"He kept me away from everyone, Mrs. Mendoza. My parents, my friends... I haven't seen my family in six years. He told them I ran away with another man."
I didn't waste another second. I picked up my phone, dialed my long-time family attorney, and instructed him to meet us immediately at the county hospital.
An hour later, Mariana was admitted into an examination room while I waited nervously in the tiled hallway. The medical staff worked quickly, their faces grim as they documented her severe malnutrition, dehydration, and untreated fractures.
After two hours, a senior physician, Dr. Evans, stepped out of the room. He looked shaken.
"Mrs. Mendoza? Could I speak with you privately in my office?"
Before I could answer, my phone vibrated in my hand. It was Rodrigo.
"Tell me you didn't take Mariana to a hospital," Rodrigo said, his voice terrifyingly quiet.
"I did. She is getting treated right now."
"Did you call a lawyer?"
"Yes, Rodrigo. I did."
A heavy silence hung on the line. For the first time in my life, I heard genuine, suffocating panic in my son's ragged breathing.
"If Mariana talks... if she lets them run those full tests, she loses everything too," Rodrigo hissed into the receiver.

"What are you talking about?"
He hung up without another word.
