Chapter 17 - Dawn on the Pacific

The fallout was swift and absolute. Within forty-eight hours, the international media broke the story of the Aether Health syndicate. Agent Miller and dozens of corrupt officials were arrested on federal treason and racketeering charges. Sterling's global medical empire was completely dismantled, its vast assets seized and converted into a public foundation for victims of human trafficking and medical exploitation.

Rodrigo remained in prison, serving his sentence, but his full confession and assistance in dismantling Sterling's underground facility spared him from the death penalty. He would spend the rest of his life behind bars, finally confronting the damage he had wrought.

Two years later, I stood on the porch of a small wooden house overlooking the Pacific Ocean.

The morning air was crisp and sweet, carrying the scent of salt and blooming jasmine.

Mariana walked out onto the porch, carrying two hot mugs of coffee. She had gained her weight back, her skin was radiant with health, and the deep scars on her wrists had faded into faint, silvery lines. She was halfway through her second semester of law school, dedicated to helping survivors of domestic violence and human trafficking.

"What are you thinking about, Mrs. Mendoza?" Mariana asked softly, handing me a mug and leaning against the wooden railing beside me.

I looked out at the sun rising over the endless blue horizon, feeling a profound, quiet peace settling into my chest for the first time in ten years.

"I was thinking about home," I said, taking a sip of the warm coffee.

"And how long it took us to finally find it."

Mariana smiled, placing her hand gently over mine.
