Chapter 11 - THE ASHES OF DECEIT

The morning sun rose over the valley, casting pale gold light through a blanket of lingering mist. Where the grand Van Doren Manor had once stood on the hill, only blackened stone chimneys and charred oak beams remained, smoldering quietly against the autumn sky.

In the village square below, a quiet crowd of townspeople had gathered around the stone steps of the town hall.

Inside the building's sunlit courtyard, Eleanor sat on a simple wooden bench, drinking hot tea from a tin mug while a local nurse checked a small scrape on her arm. Beside her sat Julian, his black suit covered in gray ash, his knuckles bandaged where he had wrestled Cedric to the marble floor.

The High Sheriff walked out from the inner magistrate chambers, holding a heavy leather satchel containing the charred remains of the estate ledgers and Thomas’s original survey map.

"Mrs. Vance," the Sheriff said, removing his hat and bowing his head with deep, solemn respect. "I have just dispatched a swift courier to the High Court in the capital. Lord Cedric Van Doren has signed a full written confession detailing his crimes—including the murder of your husband fifteen years ago and the systematic extortion of your son."

Eleanor set her tin mug down on the wooden bench. Her eyes filled with quiet, heavy tears—not of grief, but of profound, long-awaited relief.

"And my husband's remains, Sheriff?" Eleanor asked softly, her voice steady.

"Our men reached the northern shaft at dawn," the Sheriff replied gently. "Thomas Vance was buried beneath the old survey marker on the ridge. He was laid to rest with his surveyor's brass compass still clutched in his hand. We are bringing him home to the parish churchyard today so he can finally receive a proper Christian burial with full honors."

Julian closed his eyes, a shuddering breath escaping his chest. He reached over, taking his mother's frail, calloused hand into his own, pressing his lips gently against her knuckles.

"He never abandoned us, Mother," Julian whispered, his voice thick with emotion. "He died fighting for the truth."

"I always knew in my heart he loved us, Julian," Eleanor said softly, looking toward the distant blue mountains. "Now the whole world knows it too."
