Chapter 8 - THE UNINVITED GUEST

The sweet strains of the string quartet disintegrated into chaotic dissonance. A collective, horrified gasp rippled through the aristocratic crowd as dozens of wealthy heads turned toward the grand entrance.

Standing in the archway, framed by the cold night air outside, was not an invited noble or a wealthy bidder.

It was Eleanor.

She wore her threadbare grey wool dress, patched carefully at the elbows. Her worn leather shoes were caked with dark road mud, leaving faint prints upon the pristine white marble floor. Her silver hair was braided neatly around her head like a simple crown. She carried no weapon, no fine fan, no jewels—yet her head was held high, her posture as unyielding as a mountain cliff.

Vivienne gasped, her champagne flute slipping from her hand and shattering violently against the marble floor. "What is that filthy beggar doing here?!" she shrieked, her voice dropping all pretense of elegance. "Guards! Throw that wretched hag out!"

Two burly estate guards in scarlet uniforms immediately lunged forward, reaching for Eleanor’s thin arms.

"Lay one finger upon her, and you will be hanged for high treason against the Royal Crown!" a thunderous voice boomed from the doorway.

Stepping through the entrance right behind Eleanor was the High Sheriff of the Western Province, flanked by six royal guards clad in gleaming steel breastplates and carrying drawn broadswords!

The crowd parted in absolute panic and shock. Julian froze near the podium, his blood running cold as he stared at his mother. "Mother... no!" he gasped, his stoic mask shattering into pure terror. "Get out of here! It's a trap!"

"Stay where you are, Julian," Eleanor said. Her voice was not loud, but it possessed a strange, resonant clarity that cut through the murmurs of the panicked ballroom like a silver bell.

She walked slowly down the center aisle, her mud-stained hem dragging across the floor. The wealthy guests shrank back from her path as if she carried a plague. She stopped at the foot of the auction podium, looking directly up into the pale, furious face of Lord Cedric Van Doren.

"Fifteen years ago, Lord Cedric, you murdered my husband, Thomas Vance, in the cold darkness of the northern ridge," Eleanor proclaimed, her clear voice echoing off the high gilded ceiling. "And for fifteen long years, you forced his son to bear the bitter shame of a father's phantom treason!"

Cedric’s face turned from red to an unsightly ash gray, but he forced a deep, booming laugh that sounded brittle and hollow. "Absurd! The senile ramblings of an impoverished, crazy old hag! Sheriff, arrest this trespasser for slander!"
