Chapter 7 - THE EVENING OF THE AUCTION

By six o'clock, the storm clouds had receded, replaced by a cold, clear night sky lit by a sharp silver crescent moon. The Van Doren Manor shone like a burning beacon upon the hill, its dozens of arched glass windows casting warm, golden light across the manicured lawns and gravel driveways.

Carriages embossed with gilded crests arrived in a steady procession, discharging the county’s wealthiest aristocrats, land barons, and high-ranking officials. Inside the grand ballroom, crystal chandeliers glittered overhead, reflecting off polished white marble floors. Servants in black velvet waistcoats moved through the crowd with silver trays of champagne, while a string quartet played soft, elegant waltzes near the conservatory.

Gilded display tables lined the perimeter of the room, showcasing rare antiquities, land deeds, and glittering gems up for bid—the public facade of Lord Cedric’s vast, respectable fortune.

Julian stood near the raised auction podium at the front of the ballroom, impeccably dressed in a tailored black velvet suit. Yet beneath his crisp white linen shirt, his skin was clammy with cold sweat. His face was a stoic, emotionless mask, though his heart beat with terrifying velocity.

Tucked tightly inside his inner coat pocket rested the stolen master ledger—the ledger detailing fifteen years of Cedric's illegal gold extraction from Crown lands, complete with signatures, payoff amounts to corrupt judges, and offshore banking receipts.

He knew what this meant. Presenting this ledger to the visiting High Magistrate tonight meant destroying his own reputation, exposing his forced marriage, and likely spending years in a cell facing trial for his coerced involvement. But if it brought Cedric down and finally cleared his father's memory, Julian was ready to pay that price.

Vivienne glided up to him, the emeralds at her throat catching the chandelier light. She leaned in close, her breath warm against his ear, smelling of sweet rosewater and bitter almond.

"You look so tense, my dear husband," she purred softly, adjusting his silk cravat with slender, manicured fingers. "Enjoy the music while it lasts. A man should enjoy his final hours of freedom."

Julian looked down at her, his brow furrowing in subtle confusion at her smug confidence. Before he could respond, a heavy brass gavel struck a wooden block, echoing across the grand room.

Lord Cedric Van Doren stepped onto the elevated auction platform, raising a crystal goblet of wine to command the attention of his distinguished guests.

"Welcome, esteemed lords, ladies, and honored friends!" Cedric’s booming voice filled the hall, warm and charismatic. "Tonight, we celebrate not merely rare treasures, but the enduring prosperity and justice of our great province!"

The wealthy crowd applauded politely. Julian took a slow, deep breath, reaching his hand into his waistcoat, his fingers wrapping around the cool leather cover of the ledger. He prepared to take the three steps that would destroy his life.

Suddenly, the heavy iron-reinforced double doors at the back of the ballroom were slammed open with a thunderous bang!
