Chapter 15 - THE HEALING OF THOSE WHO REMAIN

The summer months passed peacefully as Clara stayed at the village inn, spending every afternoon at the Vance home working on the biography.

She sat for hours with Eleanor on the sunny front porch, carefully recording every memory of Thomas's early life, while Julian spent his evenings showing Clara his father's original instruments and land maps in the library.

Unlike Vivienne, who had treated the valley and its people with haughty contempt, Clara was humble, kind, and deeply curious about the land. She spent her free hours teaching Toby how to read advanced historical texts and helping Martha organize herbal remedies for the local clinic.

One warm evening, as the sun began to dip below the horizon, painting the sky in brilliant hues of violet, orange, and gold, Julian and Clara walked together along the quiet bank of the river behind the house.

"I finished the final chapter of the book today, Julian," Clara said quietly, holding a thick leather manuscript binder to her chest. "The printers in the capital are waiting for it."

Julian paused by the water's edge, a sudden, unfamiliar tightness clutching at his chest. "Then... your work here is finished? You will be returning to the capital permanently?"

Clara stopped, turning to face him under the shade of a large weeping willow. The twilight breeze ruffled her dark hair.

"The Society offered me a senior position at the Royal Library," Clara whispered, looking down at her hands before raising her clear brown eyes to meet his. "It is everything I worked five years to achieve. But..."

"But what, Clara?" Julian asked gently, stepping a fraction closer.

"When I was in the capital, I thought importance was measured by titles and grand marble buildings," Clara said softly, her voice filled with quiet emotion. "But these past months with you and your mother... I learned that true greatness is found in loyalty, truth, and love. I don't want to live in a grand city of stone, Julian. I want to stay where the heart is."

Julian’s face softened into a radiant, genuine smile—the first true smile he had worn in fifteen long years. He reached out, his warm, strong hand gently closing over hers.

"Then stay, Clara," Julian whispered, his voice steady and full of promise. "Help us build this new life."

Clara looked into his eyes and smiled, her fingers tightening warmly around his. "I would like that more than anything in the world."
