Chapter 13 - THE RETURN TO THE VALLEY

The journey back from the capital was long, but as the horse-drawn carriage rounded the final bend in the road, the familiar rolling green hills of the valley appeared in the golden afternoon sunlight.

The town was completely transformed. As the carriage rolled down the main cobblestone street, hundreds of villagers lined the sidewalks, throwing spring blossoms and waving colorful silk ribbons. The local brass band played a triumphant march on the parish steps.

The very neighbors who had once turned their backs on Eleanor, whispering cold insults about the "traitor’s poor widow," now stood with bowed heads and tearful eyes, cheering for her as she passed.

The carriage stopped near the newly constructed stone house on the northern hill—a house built on the very land Thomas had surveyed years ago.

Young Toby ran out from the front porch, accompanied by Martha, the retired cook, who was holding a tray of freshly baked apple tartlets.

"Master Julian! Mrs. Eleanor!" Toby shouted joyfully, grabbing the carriage door handle to help Eleanor step down. "Everything is ready! The entire house is swept and the hearth is burning!"

Eleanor stepped out onto the green grass, taking a deep breath of the crisp, clean mountain air. She looked up at the handsome two-story stone cottage with its white shuttered windows and large wrapping porch overlooking the river.

"It is beautiful, Julian," Eleanor whispered, her hand resting warmly on her son's arm.

"Father designed the foundation drawings for this house in his logbook, Mother," Julian revealed, looking at the stone pillars with a proud smile. "I simply followed his instructions."
