Chapter 19 - THE RECKONING OF THE FALLEN

While joy filled the valley, a starkly different scene unfolded hundreds of miles away in the cold, damp stone dungeons of the Royal Fortress.
Lord Cedric Van Doren sat on a thin bed of rotting straw in a small, windowless cell. The iron shackles around his wrists and ankles clanked softly whenever he moved. His silver hair was now matted and filthy, his once-imposing frame withered to a fragile shell of skin and bone.
A heavy wooden slot in the cell door slid open, and a stone-faced prison guard tossed a small, printed book onto the dirt floor.
"A gift from the capital printing house, prisoner," the guard sneered before slamming the slot shut.
Cedric crawled across the cold stone floor, his trembling fingers picking up the leather-bound book. On the cover, embossed in shining gold lettering, were the words:
THE INTEGRITY OF THOMAS VANCE
A Royal Biography of Honor, Courage, and Truth
Cedric opened the book with shaking hands. On the dedication page, Clara had written a single, prominent sentence:

"Dedicated to Eleanor Vance—a mother whose love broke the strongest gates and shattered the darkest lies."
Cedric let out a ragged, choked sob, dropping the book into the straw as he buried his face in his scarred, chained hands. The empire of lies he had spent a lifetime building had been completely erased, while the name of the man he murdered had become immortalized across the kingdom forever.
