Chapter 11 - SHADOWS OF THE FALLOUT

The cool moonlight of the first night after the storm brought a deceptive sense of absolute calm to Whitmore House. Yet inside the executive study, Adrian still sat alone at his red-tinea mahogany desk. On the secure computer terminal, lines of red financial data continued to blink frantically.
Although Julian Sterling and Richard Vance had been hauled away in handcuffs, the tendrils they had buried deep within the machinery of Whitmore Global could not be eradicated in a single night.
The heavy oak door knocked lightly. Thomas—the newly reinstated Chief Butler—stepped in with his characteristic composed demeanor. His posture was upright once more, stripped of the weary resignation from the days of oppression.
"Sir," Thomas placed a tray of herbal tea on the edge of the desk. "The new security team has taken over all checkpoints across the seventeen acres. Miss Grace and her brother have been settled into the east guest villa to prepare for their flight to Boston tomorrow morning."
"Good, Thomas," Adrian leaned back, rubbing his temples. "And the situation at the corporation?"
Thomas lowered his voice: "Chief Counsel Reed just reported in: apparently, before his arrest, Vance managed to trigger an automatic wire transfer from a Swiss bank. Fifty million dollars of our strategic reserve fund has been frozen in an intermediary account. If we can't verify the origin within forty-eight hours, the SEC will suspend Whitmore Global's stock trading."
Adrian narrowed his eyes. A cold smirk touched his lips. "Vance thinks he's the only one who knows how to play a multi-step game? He forgot who wrote the encryption algorithm for that banking system ten years ago."
Just then, an encrypted notification chime sounded from the secure phone on his desk. It was an incoming message from an unknown number, containing only a single line:

“Do you think taking down two pawns means you've won the game, Adrian? Look closer at the signet ring on your cousin's hand.”
Adrian froze. The Sterling family signet ring that Julian always wore was not merely an ornament; it was the sole mechanical key to unlock the secret vault beneath the old southern ruins—housing the original land deeds of the entire Whitmore family dating back to the 19th century.
