Chapter 13 - THE GUARDIAN IN THE DARK

"She won't press that button, Ms. Reed."
A clear, steady voice echoed sharply from behind a thicket of pine trees. Grace stepped out from the shadows. She no longer wore her maid's uniform, but she hadn't donned expensive attire either. She stood tall, her eyes reflecting the bright moonlight.
Evelyn startled, spinning around. "You little brat! What are you doing here?"
"I couldn't sleep knowing someone was trying to destroy this place," Grace walked calmly toward Adrian. "And I followed you from the moment you slipped away with the evidence pouch."
"You're just a low-class domestic!" Evelyn shrieked in mounting panic.
"I know what gratitude means," Grace locked eyes with Evelyn. "You said Mr. Whitmore lived in isolation and fear, but you're the one trembling right now because of your own greed."

While Evelyn was momentarily distracted, Adrian seized the moment. With the honed reflexes of a man trained in high-level close combat, he lunged forward, grabbed Evelyn's wrist, and twisted hard. The detonator flew from her hand into the wet grass.
Grace knelt down, scooped up the fallen signet ring, and handed it back to Adrian with both hands.
