Chapter 2 - A GESTURE IN THE MIST

Victor’s face flushed red with anger. “Grace! Have you lost your mind?! Take that tray back inside before I report you to Mr. Sterling!”

Grace didn't flinch. She kept her clear, calm eyes fixed on the ragged man sitting in the gravel. She was twenty-four, working double shifts at the estate to pay for her younger brother’s medical treatments, and she knew better than anyone how easily a life could crumble under the weight of bad fortune.

“He’s hungry, Victor,” Grace said softly, her voice steady. “Giving away an apple from a tray meant for the trash won't ruin Mr. Whitmore’s fortune.”

Adrian reached out with dirty, calloused hands—hands that had been meticulously stained with charcoal and earth—and took the apple. His fingers brushed against Grace’s warm hand.

“Thank you, young lady,” Adrian murmured, his deep voice muffled behind his frayed collar. “May God bless your kindness.”

“Get out of here!” Victor barked, stepping between Grace and the gate, shoving her back toward the garden path. “If Mr. Sterling sees you fraternizing with garbage at the entrance, you’ll be fired before lunch!”

At the mention of Julian Sterling—his chief financial officer and cousin—Adrian’s eyes narrowed beneath his cap.

Julian Sterling had been running the estate’s daily operations and managing the domestic staff during Adrian’s supposed "emergency business trip to London." The fact that Victor mentioned Sterling’s name with such terror—and that Sterling was approving expensive watches for low-level guards—confirmed Adrian’s worst suspicions.

Grace gathered her empty napkin, gave Adrian a small, reassuring smile through the bars, and walked back to her tray.

"Eat slowly, sir," she called back gently over her shoulder. "The morning air is cold."

As Grace disappeared down the cobblestone path toward the manor, Victor spat on the ground near Adrian’s boots.

“You got your food. Now beat it,” the guard growled. “Or next time, I won't just push you.”

Adrian slowly pulled himself up against the stone pillar. He did not run. He took a bite of the crisp red apple, keeping his head bowed as he walked away into the tree line surrounding the estate perimeter.

He didn't leave the property. Instead, he circled around the western woods toward a hidden maintenance hatch—a secret passage built into the estate’s original 1920s foundation that only he knew existed.

It was time to see what Julian Sterling was doing inside his house.
