Chapter 13 - The Trojan Horse

Forty minutes later, a single unmarked military SUV tore through the midnight streets of Charlotte, its tires squealing as it drifted around the corner toward Mercy General Hospital.
Inside the vehicle, I sat in the passenger seat, my fingers deftly wiring a localized military transmitter into a decoy micro SD card housed in a secure frequency-jamming casing.
“Are you sure about this, Colonel?” Martin asked from the driver’s seat, gripping the steering wheel so tightly his knuckles turned white. “Once you step inside that hospital room, you’ll be walking into an absolute kill zone without backup.”
“If I brought a tactical squad, they’d trigger the remote execution before we reached the third floor,” I answered calmly, sliding the decoy card into my breast pocket while keeping the real, heavily encrypted master drive locked inside a secure data-burst transmitter tethered to my wrist. “My job is to buy you enough time to upload the master file to the Pentagon’s independent inspector general database before they can wipe it.”
Martin swallowed hard. “And if the upload fails?”

I threw open the vehicle door before it had even fully stopped at the hospital’s deserted emergency loading bay, slipping into the shadows of the service entrance like a ghost.
