Chapter 4 - The House of Cards

The heavy silence of the foyer was broken by the sharp, hurried sound of footsteps echoing down the grand spiral staircase.

Robert Prescott—the patriarch of the family, whose stern visage and multi-billion-dollar empire usually commanded instantaneous deference from local politicians and business leaders alike—descended into the living room. He wore a plush velvet dressing gown, but his face was deathly pale beneath a veneer of manufactured rage.

“What is the meaning of this blatant trespassing?” Robert thundered, pointing a trembling finger at Special Agent Martin. “Show me your federal warrant right now, or I will personally ensure every single one of you faces federal charges for harassment!”

Martin didn’t flinch. He calmly pulled a heavy sheaf of official documents from his tactical vest and unfolded the top page.

“Robert Prescott, by order of the United States Federal District Court, you are under arrest for conspiracy, international money laundering, bribery of public officials, and racketeering,” Martin announced, his voice ringing clearly through the grand hall.

For a second, the patriarch stood frozen, as if processing a language he couldn’t understand. Then, a desperate panic flickered across his eyes.

“This is an outrage! A complete fabrication!” Robert shouted, stepping toward the mahogany desk where his secure landline sat. “I am calling the Governor right now! I am calling the Attorney General—!”

“Don’t bother calling anyone, Mr. Prescott,” Martin interrupted smoothly, stepping forward to block his path. “The Governor of this state was placed under federal protective custody and suspension forty-five minutes ago. His personal offshore accounts matched every single wire transfer originating from your family’s holding company.”

Robert staggered backward as if struck physically across the face. His knees buckled slightly, and he caught himself against the edge of a priceless antique table, knocking over a crystal decanter that shattered violently against the marble floor.

The impenetrable armor of wealth, privilege, and absolute impunity that had protected the Prescott family for generations dissolved in an instant—leaving behind nothing more than a terrified, cornered criminal facing the inevitable weight of justice.
