Chapter 7 - Ambush at Dawn

“Take cover!” Martin roared, instantly drawing his sidearm and shoving me toward the heavy oak frame of the study desk.

Glass shattered across the expansive living room as a hail of high-caliber rounds blasted through the floor-to-ceiling windows, turning priceless antiques into splinters. The federal tactical agents stationed in the foyer scrambled into defensive positions, returning fire with disciplined, measured bursts into the misty darkness outside.

I dropped to one knee, my military instincts taking over completely. Adrenaline flooded my veins, clearing away any lingering fatigue.

“They aren't trying to rescue the Prescotts,” I yelled over the deafening roar of gunfire, drawing my own concealed sidearm. “They’re here to wipe the slate clean. They’ve come to burn the evidence!”

“And the physical servers!” Martin shouted back, pressing his back against the stone fireplace. “The tech team hasn't finished mirroring the main terminal database in the basement!”

I didn't hesitate. While the federal agents pinned down the hostile assault team at the front entrance, I sprinted toward the rear service corridor leading down to the underground communications vault. If the shadowy syndicate behind Aegis Security wanted to erase every trace of their operation, they had to go through me first.
