Chapter 5 - Shadows in the Dark

While federal agents continued cataloging physical evidence and escorting the handcuffed members of the Prescott dynasty out to the transport vans, I stood near the floor-to-ceiling bay windows of the mansion, watching the gray dawn break over the Carolina hills.
The immediate battle was won. Robert, Margaret, Brandon, and Ethan were securely in federal custody, cut off from their vast financial network and stripped of their political shields.
Yet, as I stared out into the misty tree line bordering the vast estate, a lingering unease pricked at the back of my mind. The scale of the corruption contained on Emily’s micro SD card was simply too massive for a single regional family to orchestrate entirely on their own. They were powerful, yes—but they were merely players in a much larger, darker game.
My phone suddenly vibrated in my pocket.
Pulling it out, I saw an incoming call from an unknown, heavily scrambled VoIP number.
I slid my thumb across the screen and brought the phone to my ear, remaining silent.
A voice hissed through the speaker—distorted, synthetic, and chillingly devoid of human warmth.
“You’ve caused quite a disruption today, Colonel Hart. You pulled the thread, and now the whole sweater is unraveling.”
I didn't blink. I tightened my grip on the phone, my voice dropping into a lethal, steady register.
“If you have something to say to me, don’t hide behind a voice filter. Step out of the shadows and say it to my face.”
A low, dry chuckle echoed through the receiver.
“The Prescotts were never the masters, Colonel. They were merely the caretakers of a much deeper vault. You’ve only managed to poke a sleeping dragon. Enjoy your brief victory while it lasts—because the real war hasn't even begun.”

The line went dead with a sharp click.
I stared down at the screen as the call terminated, a cold, calculated fire igniting deep within my chest. They thought they could intimidate me with anonymous threats. They didn't yet understand the relentless nature of a mother who had already looked into hell and decided to burn it down.
