Chapter 8 - The Basement Breach

The subterranean vault smelled of ozone, overheating server racks, and copper. Red emergency backup lights bathed the concrete corridors in a harsh, pulsing glow.

As I rounded the corner toward the primary data terminal, the heavy iron door of the server room was already blown open. Sparks showered from the ruptured digital control panel. Inside, a man in a tactical black balaclava and unmarked combat gear was methodically dousing the main server racks with industrial chemical accelerant.

“Stop right there!” I barked, leveling my service pistol dead-center at his chest.

The operative froze mid-motion, a canister of fuel hissing in his gloved hand. For a split second, silence hung heavy between us, broken only by the rhythmic hum of cooling fans.

Then, a cold, mechanical voice filtered through the tiny communication speaker clipped to the operative's collar: “Terminate her. Leave no loose ends.”

The man didn't hesitate. He tossed the fuel canister directly at my face and lunged forward with a combat knife drawn.

I ducked beneath the flying canister as it smashed against the concrete wall behind me, spraying volatile fluid across the floor. Before the operative could close the distance, I stepped inside his guard, drove a brutal, military-grade palm strike upward into his chin, and swept his legs out from under him. He hit the floor hard, unconscious before he even stopped sliding.
