Chapter 16 - The Fall of the Meridian Group

Dawn broke over Charlotte with a brilliant, uncompromised clarity, washing away the lingering shadows of a corrupt empire.
The courtyard outside Mercy General Hospital was a sea of federal law enforcement vehicles, military transport trucks, and media vans broadcasting live feeds across every major news network in the nation. The names of high-ranking politicians, corporate executives tied to The Meridian Group, and co-conspiring state officials flashed across news banners in rapid succession. The entire shadow network had been irrevocably exposed, its infrastructure dismantled from the roots up.
Inside the quiet, sunlit recovery room, the heavy tension of the past few days had finally melted away.
Emily sat up against the hospital pillows, her color returning, a gentle smile touching her lips as she took a sip of warm tea. The bruises on her face were healing, but the fear that once held her captive was entirely gone.
I stood beside her bed, having finally removed my service cap, looking out the window at the flashing lights below.
The door opened softly, and Special Agent Martin stepped inside, holding a thick, official file folder stamped with the Department of Justice’s highest seal of clearance.
“It’s over, Colonel,” Martin said, his voice filled with profound respect. “The warrants have been executed nationwide. The Meridian Group is finished, and the assets of the Prescott syndicate have been permanently seized by the federal government to establish a nationwide fund for victims of corporate and domestic abuse.”
I nodded slowly, letting out a long, steady breath that felt like shedding a decades-old armor.
“And the local officials who helped them?” I asked.

“Every single one of them is behind bars awaiting military tribunal and federal prosecution,” Martin replied firmly. “No exceptions. No bail.”
He placed the file on the bedside table, saluted crisply, and quietly left the room, closing the door behind him.
