Chapter 15 - The Digital Counter-Strike

Instead of reaching into my pocket, I stared the operative dead in the eyes and smiled.
“You’re looking at the wrong screen,” I said smoothly.
Before the operative could press the detonator, the overhead hospital room lights flickered violently and died, replaced instantly by the piercing alarm of a hardwired military grid override.
A synthetic, automated voice echoed from every ceiling speaker in the building:
“Attention. Perimeter security compromised. Global master routing tables synchronized. All files uploaded to Department of Defense Inspector General database. Secure transmission complete.”
The operative froze, his finger hovering over the remote in utter disbelief. “What did you just do?”
“I didn't come here to negotiate,” I said coldly. “I came here to give your masters an audience.”

At that exact second, the reinforced windows of the hospital room shattered inward in a cascade of glittering safety glass. Flash-bang grenades flooded the room from above, filling the space with blinding white light and a deafening concussion wave.
Before the operatives could recover their equilibrium, federal military police—backed by uncorrupted units of the Department of Defense Inspector General’s elite strike force—swarmed through the broken windows and doors, pinning both operatives to the floor in a matter of seconds.
