Chapter 2 - The Weight of the Seal

Agatha’s gloved fingertips scraped frantically across the rough concrete, her nails grazing the corner of the thick plastic sleeve. But she was half a second too slow.

With a decisive step, Conrad brought the heel of his heavy work boot down firmly over the edge of the envelope, pinning it securely to the stone patio.

“Leave it, Agatha,” Conrad said, his voice flat and devoid of emotion, contrasting sharply with the chaotic violence that had preceded it. He knelt down, keeping Elliot safely tucked against his left arm, and scooped up the waterproof pouch with his free hand.

Julian was struggling to extract himself from the debris of the collapsed trellis. Dirt was caked deep into his collar, and a thin, dark stream of blood traced a slow path from the corner of his split lip down his chin. He blinked rapidly through the sudden dizziness, his eyes fixing on the waterproof pouch in Conrad’s grip. Instantly, all the color drained from his bruised face, leaving him a sickly, ashen gray.

“Conrad… put that down,” Julian wheezed, his voice cracking as he wiped wet soil out of his eyes with a shaking hand. “That’s private estate correspondence. It has nothing to do with the boy. It’s an administrative error involving historical tax filings.”

“Administrative errors don't usually require submarine-grade thermal seals and diplomatic classification marks,” Conrad replied dryly.

He flipped the heavy envelope over in his palm. Embossed in dark, indelible ink across the reinforced flap was the official, crest-stamped hologram of the Sterling-Vance Trust—the exact corporate entity Julian and Agatha had sworn in court was completely bankrupt and dissolved three years ago.

Agatha scrambled backward on her knees, her elaborate silk gown ruined, her hair disheveled. She was trembling so violently her teeth visibly chattered.

“Julian, don’t let him open it!” Agatha screamed, her voice losing all pretense of aristocratic polish. “If he looks inside that packet, the regulatory board will trace every single transaction back to our private accounts. We’ll lose everything—the estate, the holdings, all of it!”

Conrad didn't hesitate. Ignoring their frantic pleas, he dug his thumb into the reinforced thermal seam and tore the heavy plastic open, sliding out a thick stack of crisp, untampered legal affidavits and financial ledgers.
