Chapter 6 - The Unfinished Ledger

Two days later, the high-stakes panic of the garden party had quieted into a focused, methodical storm. Conrad sat at the heavy oak desk in his private study, reviewing the preliminary asset recovery manifest printed out by the federal bureau.

The forensic audit had confirmed the worst of his suspicions: Julian and Agatha hadn’t just targeted Elliot’s medical trust. Over the past five years, they had systematically dismantled dozens of smaller accounts belonging to families and local businesses across the county, funneling the stolen capital into a complex network of offshore dummy corporations.

A sharp, distinct knock sounded at the heavy oak door of the study.

“Come in,” Conrad said without looking up from the documents.

The door swung open smoothly, revealing Marcus, an old business associate and legal strategist from his father’s era who had remained silent during the worst of the family conspiracy, watching from the periphery as the pieces moved.

“Word is traveling fast through the financial district,” Marcus said, stepping into the room and placing a thick, unmarked Manila folder on the edge of the desk. “Julian and Agatha are locked tight in federal holding, and their emergency bail motions were denied across the board by the magistrate.”

Conrad looked up, studying the older man carefully. “Good. They deserve every single day of it.”

“They do,” Marcus agreed, tapping the folder with a single finger. “But you need to understand something, Conrad. They were only local board pieces in a much larger game. The primary shell corporation holding the master debt ledger isn't even registered in this state. It’s tied directly to an international syndicate based out of Zurich.”

Conrad’s eyes sharpened. He leaned back in his leather chair, opening the folder to reveal a complex, multi-layered web of foreign bank routing numbers that extended far beyond local corruption.

“So the garden party was just a localized skirmish,” Conrad murmured, his expression turning cold.

“Exactly,” Marcus replied grimly. “The real architects are still out there in the shadows, and they now know you’ve blown their primary domestic vault wide open.”
