Chapter 3 - The Missing Signatures

The scores of elite socialites, business partners, and local magistrates attending the garden party stood paralyzed across the manicured lawn. None of them dared to speak, sip their champagne, or make a move toward the gates. They were trapped in the gravity of a public explosion they never expected to witness.

Conrad caught the harsh glare of the afternoon sun on the first page of the documents. His eyes narrowed as he scanned the dense legal text.

“Asset transfers executed without primary beneficiary consent,” Conrad read aloud, his voice echoing cleanly across the frozen courtyard. “Property deeds forged under a deceased magistrate's seal. And right here—an emergency liquidation clause designed to strip Elliot of his medical trust before his seventh birthday.”

Julian lunged forward from the wreckage of the trellis, his face contorted in sheer desperation, trying to snatch the papers out of Conrad’s hands. But Conrad didn't even have to strike him again; a single, razor-sharp glare from his dark eyes made Julian freeze mid-step, his hands trembling in the air.

“You didn’t just chain my son to a garden pillar today, Julian,” Conrad said, stepping forward while keeping Elliot safely shielded behind his shoulder. “You tried to finish a paperwork execution you started the day my wife passed away. You thought by isolating us in this county, you could bleed the estate dry without a single state auditor noticing.”

“You can’t prove the origin of those documents!” Agatha shrieked, hysteria creeping into her high-pitched voice. “They’re fabricated! They were planted by your defense attorneys to stage a hostile takeover!”

“They were buried under three feet of imported peat moss in your own courtyard garden, Agatha,” Conrad retorted coldly, holding up a page stamped with a notary seal. “Hardly a subtle hiding spot for master embezzlers trying to erase their tracks.”

Julian’s eyes darted frantically toward the estate’s outer perimeter gates. He was desperately calculating an escape route, finally realizing that the local municipal police protection he had bought and paid for meant absolutely nothing if federal asset forfeiture clauses were triggered by the papers now exposed in Conrad’s hand.
