Chapter 4 - The Unexpected Ally

Before Julian could scramble to his feet and make a break for the gravel drive, the deep, heavy rumble of commercial-grade diesel engines vibrated through the estate's stone foundation.
A sleek, black-paneled audit van bearing federal regulatory insignia rolled smoothly past the wrought-iron security gates, coming to a sudden, disciplined halt directly on the pristine lawn. The side doors slid open with a sharp mechanical clatter, and three federal compliance officers stepped out with military precision, forming a perimeter.
At the center of the formation stood a sharp-eyed woman in a tailored navy suit, her silver badge gleaming brightly on her lapel.
She walked with an unhurried, commanding stride right past the shattered terracotta pots, ignoring Julian and Agatha entirely, and stopped directly in front of Conrad.
“Mr. Vance,” the woman said, nodding respectfully. “I’m Special Agent Vance-Miller with the Federal Financial Integrity Bureau. We’ve been tracking an anomalous, high-volume asset drain originating from this zip code for the past forty-eight hours.”
Julian’s knees buckled under the weight of the realization. He caught himself against the edge of a marble table to keep from collapsing completely onto the dirt.
“Federal integrity?” Julian stammered, his voice losing all its authority. “This is a private family dispute! You have no jurisdiction over domestic holdings or civil trust agreements!”
Agent Vance-Miller turned slowly, pulling a thick warrant signed by a federal judge from her leather portfolio.

“Domestic holdings funded by embezzled trust capital cease to be private the moment they cross state banking lines, Mr. Sterling,” Agent Vance-Miller said, her voice clinical and unyielding. “And given the contents of the waterproof pouch currently in Mr. Vance’s hand, our investigative scope just expanded significantly across multiple federal statutes.”
Agatha let out a low, breathless gasp and sank heavily onto the stone bench, burying her face in her dirt-stained hands as the final walls of her empire collapsed around her.
