Chapter 11 - Securing the Perimeter

I holstered my weapon, dropped to my knees beside the bed, and pulled my daughter into my arms.

“Mom... he said they were going to silence me before the morning deposition,” she sobbed into my shoulder, her whole body shaking uncontrollably.

“It’s over, sweetheart. You’re safe. I’ve got you,” I whispered, pressing a kiss to her forehead.

Federal agents and military police flooded the room moments later, securing the unconscious intruder and cordoning off the entire floor. The hospital was officially locked down under federal counter-terrorism and domestic protection protocols.

As medics rushed in to check Abigail’s vitals and ensure the syringe hadn't broken the skin, my phone buzzed again. It wasn't a text message this time. It was an encrypted video call from Arthur Vance, the federal prosecutor handling the Ferguson financial crimes division.

I swiped to answer, stepping out into the quiet hallway.

“Colonel,” Arthur’s voice came through the speaker, crisp and urgent. “We’ve decrypted the burned ledger recovered from the carriage house. It’s even worse than we imagined.”
