Chapter 19 - A New Generation

It was a crisp, clear afternoon in early autumn when the nursery upstairs was finally finished.

The walls were painted a soft, calming shade of pale blue and white. A hand-knitted blanket lay across the white wooden crib, and a stack of children's books sat neatly on the shelf.

Abigail sat in a comfortable rocking chair by the window, watching the leaves drift down from the grand oak trees outside. I stood in the doorway, holding a tray with a cup of tea, watching her peace of mind settle deeply into her bones.

“You know,” Abigail said, looking up at me with a serene smile, “for a long time, I thought I was trapped in a nightmare I could never wake up from.”

“You were never trapped,” I replied, walking over and placing the tray on the side table before resting my hand gently on her shoulder. “You just had to wait for the cavalry to arrive.”

We both smiled, knowing that the battles of the past had forged something unbreakable between us.
