Chapter 9 - Code Red in Room 412

The transport vehicle tore through the empty city streets, running red lights with its siren wailing. We pulled up to the emergency bay of St. Bernard Hospital just six minutes later.
I didn't wait for the vehicle to come to a complete stop. I shoved the door open, sprinted up the concrete steps, and flashed my military credentials at the sliding entrance. The night nurse at the front desk looked up, pale and trembling.
“Colonel Gardner! Thank God!” she cried, pointing down the corridor. “A man in a maintenance uniform forced his way past the MP checkpoint claiming there was a gas leak. He went straight toward your daughter’s room!”
I drew my sidearm, the cold steel familiar and grounding in my palm. Adrenaline surged through my veins as I sprinted down the linoleum-floored hallway, rounding the corner toward Room 412.
