Chapter 16 - The Confession Room

By sunrise, the stark interrogation room at the federal district headquarters looked less like an office and more like a dismantling yard for an empire.
Boxes of seized financial documents, hard drives, and the master ledger recovered from the carriage house lined the stainless-steel table. Nicholas Ferguson sat slumped in a metal chair across from Arthur Vance and me, his tailored suit wrinkled, his eyes bloodshot and hollow.
“She made us do it,” Nicholas muttered, staring blankly at the table. “Mother ran everything. Every shell company, every forged deed, every payoff. If you crossed her, she destroyed you.”
“Including my father?” I asked quietly, leaning forward.
Nicholas swallowed hard, his voice dropping to a whisper. “Your father... he found out she was draining the corporate pension funds to buy our way into high-society politics. He threatened divorce. Two days later, his car brakes failed on Route 9. Mother arranged it with Chief Vance.”
The final piece of the dark puzzle snapped into place with absolute clarity. The room felt entirely still.

“Write it down,” Arthur Vance said, sliding a deposition form and a pen across the table. “Sign every word of it. It’s the only chance you have to see daylight outside a federal penitentiary.”
Nicholas picked up the pen with shaking fingers. The Ferguson dynasty was dissolving right before our eyes, not with a dramatic explosion, but with the quiet scratching of a pen on paper.
