Chapter 7 - The Unseen Cavalry

Chief Vance smiled, a cold, arrogant smirk identical to Patricia Ferguson’s. “You brought a knife to a gunfight, Colonel. Hand over the book.”

I didn't flinch. I looked past his shoulder, into the dark tree line bordering the sprawling estate.

“You’re right, Chief,” I said softly. “I didn't bring a knife.”

Before Vance could ask what I meant, the deep, thunderous chop of helicopter blades drowned out the crackle of the fire. A massive military Blackhawk swept low over the treeline, kicking up a hurricane of dust and smoke, its twin searchlights blindingly locking onto the local police officers.

Simultaneously, a convoy of federal armored vehicles smashed straight through the estate's brick perimeter wall, soldiers pouring out with tactical gear and federal badges raised high.

An agent in a dark windbreaker stepped up beside me, reading from an arrest warrant.

“Chief Arthur Vance, you are under arrest for federal corruption, evidence tampering, and conspiracy. Drop your weapon.”

Vance stared in sheer horror as his own officers slowly lowered their weapons, realizing they had nowhere to run.

I looked down at the housekeeper, then toward the burning carriage house, knowing this was only the beginning of tearing down the Ferguson empire. My phone buzzed in my pocket. A text from Abigail at the hospital: Mom... a man just tried to enter my room.

My blood froze. The trap wasn't finished yet.
