Chapter 13 - THE PAIR OF MITTENS

The private recovery room was quiet, bathed in the soft golden glow of the afternoon sun filtering through the window curtains.
David lay in a hospital bed on the left, an IV line hooked to his arm, looking exhausted but deeply happy. In the bed beside him sat Lily, her pale cheeks already showing a faint, healthy pink flush.
When the door opened and Eleanor rolled inside, Lily’s big brown eyes lit up instantly.
"Grandma!" Lily squeaked softly, using the name for the very first time.
The word echoed in Eleanor’s heart like the sweetest melody she had ever heard. She rolled up to the side of Lily's bed, reaching out to hold her small, warm hand.
"How are you feeling, my darling?" Eleanor asked softly.
"I feel warm," Lily giggled softly. "My dad said you sent the bad men away."
"I did," Eleanor smiled, her eyes glistening with tears. "No one is ever going to hurt you or your father again."
David reached across from his bed, taking Eleanor’s other hand. "Thank you, Mom. For believing us."
"I never stopped loving you, David," Eleanor said, looking at her son with profound devotion. "Not for a single second of my life."
Eleanor reached into her handbag. She pulled out a small, faded velvet box—the one she had kept in her nightstand drawer for twenty-six long years.
She opened the silver clasp.
Inside lay a second hand-knitted blue mitten—identical to the one Lily had brought into Courtroom 4B, complete with the same white snowflake pattern across the palm, preserved perfectly across the decades.
Lily gasped softly, reaching into her jacket pocket on the bedside table and pulling out her own mitten.
She held them side-by-side. The two mittens—separated by twenty-six years of tragedy, greed, and distance—fit together perfectly, completing the pair.
"Look, Dad!" Lily beamed, holding the two mittens up in the sunlight. "They match!"

David smiled, tears streaming down his face as he squeezed Eleanor’s hand tightly. "Yeah, sweetie. They match."
Outside the hospital window, the winter snow continued to fall gently over the city, but inside the room, surrounded by warmth, justice, and love, the Vance family was finally whole again.
